Zagreb
The state authorities in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are urged to complete a comprehensive list of the victims from the Second World War and postwar periods as soon as possible, in order to thwart the manipulation of the victims
Zagreb, (IKA) – Those assembled at the international conference entitled Croatian Martyrs and Victims from the Period of the Communist Regime, held on April 25 and 26 in the building of the Croatian Conference of Bishops in Zagreb, examined the evidence of martyrdom from our recent past and arrived at certain conclusions. In the adopted conclusions, signed by the Commission for Croatian Martyrology of the Croatian Conference of Bishops and the Bishops’ Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is emphasized that it is necessary for each diocese to appoint a commissioner for Croatian martyrology, who will coordinate the work in the diocese and parishes. As a starting point for the work of the diocesan commissions, a list should be compiled of all the victims in every Catholic family. In this way, among other things, the memory of those persons whose names could not be mentioned for a long time should be incorporated in the memory of individual families. In the conclusions, the Church and Croatian people are urged to continue and complete work on finding the martyrs among the victims and initiating canonical procedures for them. It is proposed that each diocese should designate a Day of Martyrs and the manner of commemorating that it in its territory. Pastors are encouraged to continue collecting testimonies from living witnesses. For the effective supervision and direction of these activities, the Commission for Croatian Martyrology of the Croatian Conference of Bishops and the Bishops’ Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue developing joint publications and websites, and try to establish an office. The Commission will publish the proceedings of this conference as soon as possible and organize new meetings. The state authorities in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are urged to complete a comprehensive list of the victims from the Second World War and postwar periods as soon as possible, in order to thwart the manipulation of the victims. The state authorities in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are also called upon to act more decisively in the condemnation of the crimes of communist ideology and to promote democracy and the freedom of each individual.
