Zagreb, (IKA) – A Memorial Mass for Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, Maria, and all the Polish officials who perished in the air crash near the Russian city of Smolensk was held on Sunday, April 11, at the Zagreb cathedral. The Mass was celebrated by the rector of the Zagreb cathedral, the Most Rev. Josip Kuhtić, together with Polish priests who serve in Croatia. Participants in the Mass included the minister of foreign affairs, Gordan Jandroković; the minister of defense, Branko Vukelić; the Polish ambassador to Croatia, Wiesław Tarka; friends of Poland and many worshippers. At the beginning of the Eucharistic celebration, the Most Rev. Kuhtić urged the faithful to pray for the deceased to be received by the Lord in heaven, to pray for their families, for courage and comfort, and to pray for the blessing of the dear Polish people.
“We express our sincere Christian condolences to the Polish people on the occasion of this great tragedy. When we Christians express Christian condolences, we always do so in light of the Christian virtues of faith, hope and love. Perhaps such moments that occur in our lives tell us much about how strong we are, how strong we are when we are together, when we are united in one faith and in prayer,” said the Most Rev. Kuhtić. At the end of the Mass, Ambassador Wieslaw Tarka of Poland spoke on his own behalf and that of the Polish people, saying that each victim is a great tragedy for Poland as a country but also for his or her loved ones, and sincerely thanked everyone for the numerous expressions of condolence sent to him immediately following this terrible tragedy.
