Meeting of a Delegation from the Serbian Orthoodox Church with Mayor Milan Bandić of Zagreb

Zagreb, (IKA) – Mayor Milan Bandić of Zagreb and his associates met with representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church, led by Metropolitan Jovan of the Eparchy of Zagreb-Ljubljana and All of Italy on June 2 at the Zagreb City Hall, according to an announcement by the Information Service of the Office of the Mayor of Zagreb. Particular attention was devoted to the return of the property of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the building of a museum within the framework of the Serbian Orthodox Community of Zagreb at 7 Ilica Street, where several institutions of the Zagreb-Ljubljana Eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church would be located, the seeking of adequate premises that would also be used by the city for the benefit of the citizens and worshippers (the majority of the time) and the Orthodox Church, and the participation of the city of Zagreb in the construction of a secondary school to be built at Sveti Duh.

In compliance with a request from the Serbian Orthodox Church addressed to the municipal authorities for assistance in financing the construction of the secondary school at Sveti Duh, the mayor particularly emphasized that he would look into how he could secure the funding for this purpose in the rebalanced Budget of the City of Zagreb, bearing in mind the needs of the citizens of the city of Zagreb for school facilities.

It was also agreed that the other topics would all be analyzed within expert groups, together with representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church, in order to achieve rapid and quality solutions.

Metropolitan Jovan especially thanked Mayor Bandić for the goodwill and effort he has demonstrated in resolving matters of common interest.
The mutual desire was also expressed for correct cooperation between the city of Zagreb and the Serbian Orthodox Church, thereby emphasizing significant characteristics of the city of Zagreb and its citizens, i.e. it is multiethnic, multicultural and multiconfessional, according to the statement from the Office of the Mayor.
