Zagreb, February 21, 1999 (IKA) – Today, February 21, Radio Marija marked its second anniversary. A Mass in celebration was conducted at the Church of the Holy Cross in Siget by Cardinal Franjo Kuharić together with several other priests. At the beginning of the Mass, Cardinal Kuharić was greeted by the local parish priest, Fra Emanuel Hoško, who thanked him for his support and for participating in the anniversary celebration. During the sermon, Cardinal Kuharić spoke about the preparations for the Great Jubilee Year 2000, particularly during the current year that is dedicated to God the Father. He also addressed problems affecting today#!s society which is exposed to many sinful temptations. Cardinal Kuharić emphasized the great role of the mass media, particularly the Catholic media which brings the Good News to all and can make an impact upon society.
The anniversary celebration, entitled “Two Years Together” continued during the afternoon in the Auditorium of the Boys#! Seminary. The program consisted of music, speeches and prayer. The participants were the speakers, associates, choirs, youth groups and other guests of Radio Marija.
Radio Marija is the first non-profit radio station in Croatia. It broadcasts religious programs for the city of Zagreb and vicinity. Besides being non-profit, Radio Marija is mainly volunteer-operated. In its two years, more than a hundred associates have been involved, both priests and laity. In keeping with its motto, “Radio Marija – a Christian voice in your home,” Radio Marija attempts to provide daily spiritual sustenance to all ages, particularly persons faced with spiritual dilemmas. This is radio with which listeners can pray, meditate spiritually, discuss religion simply and listen to theologians. Radio Marija is increasingly including other Church lay associations in its programming. Radio Marija covers current events in religious life and the society through forums and round-table discussions. Radio Marija places more emphasis upon universal spiritual needs than informative content.
