Zagreb, April 9, 1998 (IKA) – Archbishop Josip Bozanić of Zagreb, president of the Croatian Conference of Catholic Bishops, met with Serbian Orthodox Metropolitan Jovan Pavlović at the headquarters of the Serbian Orthodox Zagreb Eparchy on Tuesday, April 7. On this occasion, Metropolitan Pavlović acquainted Archbishop Bozanić with the work of the newly established Ecumenical Committee for Philanthropic Assistance to National Minorities in the Republic of Croatia. There was also discussion about the return of clergy and refugees and renovation of sacral and cultural buildings that are an integral part of the Croatian cultural heritage. Asked to assess the meeting, Archbishop Bozanić expressed his satisfaction “because this was a meeting of religious leaders that serve the same territory … We all look to the Gospels for our program and we want to promote peace and forgiveness on that basis,” said the president of the Croatian Conference of Catholic Bishops. “We met to further the whole undertaking of drawing closer together and overcoming the tragic consequences of the war. I feel it is our Christian duty, in the spirit of the Resurrection of Christ, to resurrect within ourselves all virtues and every good for a happy and better future, in order to celebrate the name of God and the Resurrected Christ with dignity as Christians.”
