Appeal by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Bishops' Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina Regarding Protests in that Country

We express our human solidarity with all our fellow citizens being forced to live lives unworthy of human beings.

Sarajevo, (IKA) – “For several days, we have been witnessing the unfortunate but not unexpected events that have shaken many cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The citizens have primarily been protesting the dramatically grave social conditions but also the manner that this country is being governed and led,” reads a statement issued by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Bishops’ Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina published on February 10, 2014, regarding the ongoing protests by the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The statement was signed by the President of the Commission, Bishop Franjo Komarica of Banja Luka.
The statement notes that the Commission has repeatedly warned of the plight of the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina. “And on this occasion, as on many previous occasions, we express our human solidarity with all our fellow citizens who are being forced to live lives unworthy of human beings, generally due to no fault of their own. We also most decisively oppose and condemn all types of vandalism, threats to human life and destruction to the property of others or public property, as well as any manipulation of the disaffected masses of people, especially the young.”
The statement calls for “all those responsible for the functioning of the legal and social state to undertake all measures necessary, especially the just distribution of material goods, in order to reduce or even bridge the current large gap between the rich and poor.”
