Sarajevo, September 14, 1996 (IKA) – The archbishop of Sarajevo, Cardinal Vinko Puljić, issued a statement in which he called for the agreement on the future organization of Sarajevo to be signed before the elections in Bosnia- Herzegovina. On Wednesday, September 11, he sent this statement to the leaders of the major parties in the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, representatives of the Serbian ethnic community in Sarajevo, the deputy high commissioner for implementing the peace agreement, Michael Stein, and the American assistant secretary of state, John Kornblum. In his letter, Cardinal Puljić calls for safeguarding the equal rights of all ethnic groups to participate in the municipal administration, jobs, university services, and the right to apartments, cautioning against forced and illegal evictions. “As the leader of Catholic faithful, I see real elements for such a Sarajevo in the proposal presented by Michael Steiner. However I do not see why it has not been signed already. I fear that it would be too late to sign after the elections”.
