Zagreb, (IKA) – Following the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25, killing over 3,000 people, injuring over 6,000 and leaving tens of thousands homeless, the President of Caritas Croatia, Bishop Josip Mrzljak, launched a national campaign on April 27 to collect monetary assistance for the survivors.
Thus, Caritas Croatia has joined the urgent humanitarian efforts being carried out by the Caritas Internationalis network, which includes 164 member organizations from around the world, to help provide assistance to the people of Nepal who have survived this traumatic experience, find survivors under the rubble, establish temporary accommodations and obtain the basic necessities: shelter, water, food, sanitation and hygiene materials, clothing and footwear. For this purpose, Caritas Croatia will send the initial amount of 20,000 euros from its Intervention Fund to the survivors in Nepal via the Caritas network.
According to the Director of Caritas Nepal, Fr. Pius Perumana, S.J., Caritas is supplying the victims with foodstuffs and tents, as many people are on the streets and in dire need. “We do not know what the actual situation is in some regions because many large buildings have been destroyed. The temperatures drop considerably at night here, rain is expected and, most urgently, the people need lodgings. The situation is particularly traumatic for children sleeping outdoors at night. We are distributing candles and matches to the people because they do not have electricity,” said Perumana.
Caritas Croatia urges all Croatian citizens to participate in the campaign to help the victims of the earthquake in Nepal so that we can come to the aid of those afflicted by this dramatic natural disaster with solidarity and sacrifice.
