The citizens of the Republic of Croatia, not only believers, will remember Pope John Paul II with profound respect and genuine gratitude as a great friend, recalling his three historical visits to our country, said the president of the Republic of Croatia.

Zagreb (IKA) – The president of the Republic of Croatia, Stjepan Mesić, issued a statement to Croatian Television (HTV) on the occasion of the death of Pope John Paul II.

“The death of Pope John Paul II is an immeasurable loss for the Catholic Church, for all believers but also for the entire world. During a pontificate of over a quarter century, this Pope was not only a religious leader but a tireless champion of improved relations among people, countries, civilizations and religions, which brought him the respect of millions of people throughout the world,” said President Mesić, recalling details of the Pope’s rich biography.

“The citizens of the Republic of Croatia, not only believers, will remember Pope John Paul II with profound respect and genuine gratitude as a great friend, recalling his three historical visits to our country,” said the president of the Republic of Croatia. President Mesić also mentioned his personal meetings with the Pope and his belief that John Paul II will be remembered as a great pope. “His place in history has long been insured. Now he has taken his place in eternity,” noted President Mesić at the end of his remarks.
