The Justice and Peace Commission on the Protection of Croatian Water Sources and the Adriatic Sea
Zagreb
The Croatian Parliament should adopt suitable legislation for the protection and preservation of this national treasure.
Zagreb, (IKA) – A regular session of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Croatian Conference of Bishops, Bishop Vlado Košić presiding, was held on Monday, December 10, at the CCB Secretariat in Zagreb.
Among other current topics regarding public and church life in the Republic of Croatia, the Commission discussed questions in connection with the protection of Croatian water sources and the Adriatic Sea, according to the statement issued from the session. “Regarding our generation’s responsibility concerning water, as our great national treasure, the Commission is of the opinion that it is necessary to do everything for its protection and preservation. This is especially the duty of the Croatian Parliament, which should adopt suitable legislation regarding this crucial question. From the position that it is necessary to coordinate Croatian laws with European legislation and that we have responsibility toward all creation, in connection with the topic of water the Commission considers it important to emphasize that water is our national treasure and that each inhabitant of our country should be guaranteed access to water as a basic necessity. In the coming period, the Commission will publish and present a document on this topic.
Regarding the course of events in connection with the holding of the parliamentary elections, the Commission appeals for respect for the Constitution and institutions, especially the Parliament as the supreme instance from which the mandate of the Government issues. The Commission is also of the opinion that the decisions of the Parliament, as the supreme legislative body in the country, should not be derided regarding the implementation of the ecological fishing zone in the Adriatic, which will ultimately also be in the interests of our neighbors. The Commission has already taken several steps for purposes of cooperation, particularly with the Justice and Peace Commissions of Bosnia and Herzegovina and of Slovenia, and will continue to cooperate with other European commissions,” reads the statement issued from the session.
