The Episcopal Coat-of-Arms of Auxiliary Bishop Valentin Pozaić
Zagreb (IKA) (IKA )
Zagreb (IKA) – Bishop Pozaić’s motto, “Choose life” (Dt 30, 19) is connected with his professional activities in bioethics through the building of a civilization of love and a culture of life, in the spirit of the new evangelization. The shield of the bishop’s coat-of-arms is divided into two fields: the upper red and the lower blue. On the transition from blue to red, as if on the horizon, is the sun-host with the Jesuit monogram: the Greek letters IHS – iota, eta and sigma, the abbreviation of the name of Jesus – Iesous. Some also read this abbreviation as the initial letters of three Latin words: Jesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus, the Savior of Mankind). Christ’s monogram with its powerful symbolism of the sun-host symbolizes a well of light, warmth and life, especially meaningful in this Year of the Eucharist. On the blue portion of the shield is an eight-pointed star, Stella maris – Star of the Sea, a reference to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The wavy lines in the blue field signify the waves of the sea as well as the rolling hills of Msgr. Pozaić’s place of birth, the parish of Marija Bistrica in Croatian Zagorje. The three-stranded braid along the inside border of the shield and the cross at the top refer to the roots of the recognizable Croatian historical and cultural identity.
